Sorrento Information and Public Amenities Pavilion

Overlapping landscape and streetscape to create a contemporary meeting space that references the history of Port Phillip Bay.

  • Client Brief

How can a small building contribute to the success of its larger streetscape? A project to transform a busy accessway for trucks into a pedestrianised street involved the establishment of new public amenities and a tourist information kiosk. Passive surveillance, access, durability all being significant aspects of the brief, the question for the design was how to integrate these requirements with the new civil works and landscaping while clearly identifying a new, contemporary, public amenity and information facility.

    Design Response

The approach we took was make the project bigger – not by increasing its floor area, but through connections – to the street, to the surrounding landscape, to the change in seasons, to history.

Significant seasonal fluctuations in tourist numbers meant that the information centre could be a small enclosed space in winter, and open to provide a sheltered space in summer using surrounding paved areas. This expansion is framed by an arc, drawn from the landscape plan, which curves inward to the information centre, rising to provide a seat, a counter, and to display information.

This cast concrete arc, appearing like an eroded or submerged wall, echoes the figure of the roof over the information centre and prefabricated public toilets. Derived from the stretched profile of a historic lime kiln wall, it is radically transformed: something heavy, solid, and vertical expressed as light, hollow and horizontal.
