Student Recreation Pavilion (Monash University,
Berwick Campus)
The Berwick pavilion forms the north enclosure to a U-shaped
courtyard surrounded by 2 storey student residential wings. It
is designed as a permeable threshold between the green courtyard
garden and a future public plaza with a performance shell for
entertainment.
Inspired by an Islamic painting of an enclosed pavilion in a
Mogul garden, the steel framed, glassy building houses a flexible,
multi-purpose space and ancillary areas (kitchen, laundry, toilets,
meeting rooms, mailboxes) for a range of student activities. The
boundary between inside and outside is blurred by the glazed walls
and large sliding doors which encourage free access between the
interior and the verandah spaces adjacent. Like our Clayton Pavilion,
the Berwick facility is designed to encourage student social interaction.
