Greenhills Primary School, Stage 1
Under Construction
The master planning of the Greenhills site gives the functions
of teaching & learning, administration and specialist facilities
each its own footprint on the site.
A major feature of the master plan is the large central courtyard
for the complex, and smaller courtyards within buildings.
The design of administration and GPC wings intended them to act
as distinctly separate - but of equal importance. While there
is an architectural cohesion between the two in their overall
appearance, they are different.
The focus of the spaces in the admin wing is on the planted internal
courtyard. It is more inward-looking and private. The classrooms
are oriented to the external environment for natural light and
fresh air, while shared withdrawals provide smaller, more intimate
learning spaces overlooking internal courtyards.
The admin wing is more formal and expresses a vernacular courtyard
building type. Its plan is organised around the central courtyard.
The GPC wing, on the other hand, is more linear. Classrooms are
arranged either side of a spine of withdrawals and courtyards.
Visual banding of the façade elements is a strong visual
element in the GPC building elevations, whereas in the admin building
the banding is fragmented, reflecting the more varied space use
within.
