PORT REDEVELOPMENT - Sale VIC
Workshop Architecture investigated the feasibility of redeveloping
the Port of Sale into a cutting edge eco-tourist location as a
threshold to the picturesque waterways of the Gippsland Lakes
System. The proposed design was to include numerous townhouse/apartment
style accommodation, more secluded private residences, a small
commercial strip and a large marina, including drydock, and a
public boardwalk/circulation space.
The central role of utilising Environmentally Sustainable Design
in a visible and pedagogical fashion added significant complexity
and interest to the project. The Sale Wetlands close to the Port
of Sale were given recognition under the international Ramsar
Convention which lays down requirements for the sustainable use
of natural wetland areas.
The project had these specific environmental concerns involved
as an integral element of the proposed design, including:
7-star rated eco-tourist accommodation; 7-star ‘Demonstration’
Green Villas; eco-focused commercial hub; visible integration
of small-scale renewable energy sources; community Gardens as
an integral element of the urban fabric.
