Burk Road Addition
This standalone extension deliberately seeks continuity with the earlier renovation, whilst together sitting in counterpoint to the existing federation era home.
Design Response
Whilst a standalone building this project operates as an extension to this elegant federation era home in Glen Iris. With matching cladding materials, window systems and fittings to a renovation of several years earlier it deliberately seeks continuity, while both sit in neutral counterpoint to the original house.
With a garage and small workshop at the level of the street and driveway, the ceiling level is maintained whilst the floor level drops with the topography of the block beyond. This creates a bungalow and guestroom with generous ceiling height whilst a deck connects to the central play space and external living areas of the backyard.
The tilted timber clad cube contains bathroom and kitchenette and creates an intimate private internal courtyard allowing generous northern light into the living areas. This tilted cube also plays off the tilted square external deck of the earlier extension. Together they form an integrated ensemble of neutral contemporary elements against the rich red brick and terracotta backdrop of existing houses both on the block and adjacent.
